The fuel used in many disposable lighters is liquid butane, C4H10. How many carbon atoms are in 1.00 of butane? Thanks. I can’t figure it out.
That’s 1 gram of butane

  1. jvcc06 says:

Convert to moles butane. molecular mass of 1 mole of butane is 4*12+10*1=58g, using mass of C as 12amu and H as 1amu.
1 g/ 58 g =.0172 moles butane. In 1 mole of butane, there are 4 moles of Carbon. .0172*4= .0688 moles carbon. Multiply this by Avogadro’ s number 6.022X10^23. .0688*6.022X10^23=4.14×10^22 atoms carbon.
